Grateful for the Journey – 2nd Gathering of Barka Network Leaders and Streetworkers
We were delighted to take part in the 2nd Gathering of Leaders and Streetworkers of the Barka Network, entitled “Grateful for the Journey”, held at the Barka Community Integration Association in Chudobczyce, Poland (21-22/03/2026).
This two-day event brought together nearly 80 participants and was a meaningful expression of appreciation for the work of Leaders, Streetworkers, and staff involved in Barka programmes operating in Poland, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Canada.
Leaders and Streetworkers within the Barka Network are people who have experienced life’s hardships, overcome them, and now give testimony that, as long as we live, it is always possible to find a way out of crisis. Their personal journeys are a powerful source of hope and encouragement for others.
Through workshops, shared meals, and conversations in smaller groups, we reflected on how important continued education, personal development, and active engagement are for Leaders and Streetworkers in supporting the rebuilding of lives and communities in Poland and abroad.
The meeting strengthened the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood among us. It created a space for sharing testimonies of recovery and the real benefits of a sober and stable life. It was also an opportunity to listen to the messages shared by Leaders and Streetworkers about personal crises and the challenges they face, including returning from work in Barka missions abroad to everyday life in Poland.
During the gathering, the Code of the Barka Network Leader and Streetworker was officially presented. The document is rooted in Barka’s philosophy and 37 years of experience, and it was developed over the last 15 months through monthly meetings with Leaders and Streetworkers held online.
We also reflected on the development plan for the Leaders and Streetworkers group for the next three years, focusing on building stronger support structures and further education within the framework of the Academy of Leaders and Streetworkers.
We are grateful for this inspiring time of reflection, unity, and shared commitment, and we look forward to continuing this important work together across the international Barka community.
